Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician. Born October 20, 1964, she was the 49th Vice President of the United States. Harris is the first female vice president and highest-ranking female official in U.S. History, as also the first African American and second Asian American vice president. As a member of the Democratic Party, she was the attorney general for California between 2011 and 2017 and was an United States senator representing California from 2017 to 2021. Harris was born in Oakland and graduated from Howard University, University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She started her career with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Then she was recruited to join the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003, she was appointed the San Francisco district attorney. In 2010, Harris was appointed Attorney General for California. She was re-elected in 2014. Harris was the United States junior senator from California, from 2017 to 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez in the 2016 Senate election to become the 2nd African American woman and the first South Asian American to serve in the United States Senate. Harris was a senator and was a vocal advocate for reforms to healthcare as well as federal cannabis de-scheduling a pathway to citizenship for immigrants without a legal status and the DREAM Act, a ban against assault weapons, and progressive tax reform. She gained a national profile for her provocative questions of Trump administration officials in Senate hearings, including Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of assault on a woman.
